Prevention techniques at Wesley Chapel Dentistry have helped patients in Wesley Chapel, New Tampa, and Zephyrhills stay healthy and save money over the past 15 years.

A healthy smile not only looks good but excellent oral health can improve your total body systemic health by reducing your risk factors for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, low birth weight deliveries after pregnancy, asthma, and other inflammatory diseases.

Regularly scheduled preventive dentistry visits - two to four times a year - allow your dentist and dental hygienist to help prevent oral health problems and detect signs of other total body health problems at early stages.

These appointments may include screenings, teeth cleanings, fluoride, sealants, and other preventive treatments and can keep your smile bright and healthy for a lifetime.

Dental Check-ups and Teeth Cleaning

Choosing a trusted partner for your oral health is a wise choice! Every six months, you can plan on an excellent preventive dentistry visit with our gentle dentist, Dr. Zack Kalarickal, and one of our gentle dental hygienists - Ashley or Sheida. Brushing and flossing every day is the most important protection for your oral health but having a compassionate, friendly coach in your corner for every visit will help keep your mouth healthy and help you share the joy of your smile all over Wesley Chapel.

We have convenient preventive dentistry appointment times available throughout the week and you may contact us by phone, email, text message, or in person to find an appointment that is right for you.

Each time you visit, you will be greeted warmly and promptly by a Wesley Chapel Dentistry team member who is dedicated to making you as comfortable as possible while keeping your mouth healthy.

If you have dental insurance, your preventive dentistry visit is likely paid in full by your insurance plan. Ask us how to help you take full advantage of your plan.Remember - the best insurance is actually coming to visit your dental care team on schedule and doing a great job at home with brushing and flossing!

During this visit, your friendly hygienist will check your blood pressure, review any changes in medicines you are taking, give you a mouth rinse to swish, take a look at your head and neck, the structures in and around your mouth, and each individual tooth. Depending on your risk factors for dental cavities and periodontal disease, check up X-ray images may be taken. Your dental hygienist will show you how great you are doing with your home care and give you helpful tips if there are areas of concern.

The professional dental cleaning will remove bacteria and plaque (filmy food substance that nourish the bacteria) from hard-to-reach places within the mouth. Tartar or calculus is the calcified plaque that can only be removed by the dental hygienist or dentist. A professional dental cleaning can also remove surface stains from your teeth, making them appear brighter.

Usually, at every six month visit, Dr. Zack Kalarickal will also perform a check up examination. This is usually a pretty quick part of your dental hygiene visit because by this time, you are usually well on track to a successful oral health routine but feel free to ask him any questions that would help you understand your health conditions and all of your options. He is always happy to help!

Oral Cancer Screenings

The best health outcomes for patients are for those who are diagnosed and treated as early as possible. Over the past few years, head and neck cancer, particularly oral and pharyngeal cancer, has become far more common and has affected many people without the traditional risk factors. Surprisingly, there has been a significant increase in oral cancer among women in their 30s and 40s including non-smokers and non-drinkers.

As a complimentary service, at each dental hygiene visit, a dental hygienist or Dr. Zack Kalarickal will perform the oral cancer screening by examining the structures of the head and neck, particularly the mouth, for any visual signs of abnormalities. Any lumps, bumps, or other unusual areas may be identified as an area of concern and early identification helps to minimize problems.

Additionally, in our Wesley Chapel Dentistry office, we offer Velscope Oral Cancer Screening Technology as an adjunct instrument during your preventive dentistry visits to help identify potential suspicious areas developing below the skin surface.

Early Diagnosis

It is easy to put off health care visits - especially dental care when you feel like you are not experiencing any problems. We also know that sometimes patients are anxious about dental treatment procedures, about the cost of dental treatment, and the convenience of appointments. We want your visit to the dentist in Wesley Chapel to be as easy as it can be for you and for each visit to help prevent your need for future dental procedures. Call us today so we can help!

We need to be aware that just because patients do not notice any problems that they do not exist. As an example, when a patient has high blood pressure or high cholesterol, he/she may not feel as though there is a problem but it is advisable to treat these conditions before the more noticeable problem of a heart attack or stroke occur.

Gingivitis and periodontitis are diseases originating from bacteria around teeth and gums which not only lead to bigger dental problems, they also complicate your total body health by making diseases like diabetes more unmanageable and can lead to greater risks for stroke, heart attack, and even complications in pregnancy.

Small dental cavities may not be visible but if left untreated with tooth colored dental fillings, you might end up needing root canal therapy and a dental crown or you might possibly lose the tooth and need to replace it with a dental implant.

We use the most advanced techniques and technology to discover just how healthy your mouth is so we can work with you to target the areas of concern so that small problems are treated early with the most successful and affordable dentistry.

Trust our Wesley Chapel Dentistry team to identify problems early and to work with you to help you choose the options that work best for you to get your mouth healthy and save money throughout your lifetime!

Dental Sealants

Daily brushing and flossing are the best ways to help prevent cavities, but sometimes those back teeth called molars have deep narrow grooves and cavity causing bacteria can sometimes be difficult to remove. There is a great way to

protect your teeth from cavities by sealing out bacteria before they can damage your teeth - with a white or clear protective coating called a dental sealant.

Sealants have been shown to reduce the risk of tooth decay by nearly 80%. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), "school-age children without dental sealants have almost three times more cavities than children with dental sealants."

Children and adults can benefit from sealants, but the idea is to apply dental sealants early with a quick, comfortable, and easy process before early cavities begin. Sealants usually last about 5 years and may need to be replaced.

Dr. Zack and the American Dental Association recommend that you

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. We always send you home from your dental hygiene visit with a soft brush that should help you reach all areas easily.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are worn out. Be careful not too brush too hard! * Make sure to use an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste.
  • Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums.
  • Brush the outer surfaces, the inner surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth.
  • To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.
  • Use dental floss - ask us to make it easy to clean in between teeth.
  • Eat a balanced diet that limits sugary beverages and snacks.
  • See your favorite Wesley Chapel Dentist for a professional dental cleaning at least every 6 months.
